Dongnimmun Gate
- In June 1898, the Independence Club decided to build a structure symbolizing the country’s independence at the site of Yeongeunmun Gate (where Chinese envoys used to be received). The 14.28m-high, 11.48m-wide structure was built in imitation of the Arc de Triomphe de l‘ Étoile (Triumphal Arch) in Paris with funds raised by the said club. Korean engineer Sim Eui-seok supervisedg the work, which was carried out by Chinese workers, using 1,850 granite stones measuring 45 x 30cm.
- It was transferred to its current location due to the construction of Seongsan Highway in 1979.
